The Children's Relief Nursery
Columbia-Willamette Women of Vision recognizes the fact that there is poverty and injustice in our own community. In the fall of 2002, Columbia-Willamette Women of Vision
(CWWOV) began volunteering at the Children's Relief Nursery in the St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland.
The Children's Relief Nursery serves children from birth through three years who are at serious risk for abuse or neglect. Studies show that
comprehensive, early intervention programs such as this can reduce child abuse by up to 80%. It is confirmed that one in ten children in North Portland is a victim of abuse and/or neglect. The
Children's Relief Nursery has three core values: 1) every child deserves a safe and healthy family; 2) early intervention is the best long-term social investment we can make; and 3) assisting parents in
providing appropriate, nurturing care for their children will ultimately break the cycle of abuse and neglect.

Columbia-Willamette Women of Vision, Children's Relief Nursery Closet Auction |
|
"If you build it they will come." On September 28, 2002, CWWOV invited their partnership to a lively auction to fund the construction cost for a children's clothes closet for the new
Portland Relief Nursery (now called the Children's Relief Nursery) building. Friends enjoyed out-bidding friends for shelving, closet rods, nails, and paint! The next two weeks, a
clothing drive filled the closet to overflowing with winter clothing for the children aged 0 to 3 years who are being served by the Relief Nursery. The following week CWWOV volunteers
began staffing the closet weekly. The CRN staff selects and delivers much-needed clothing for children of moms and dads struggling with many challenges. Other CWWOV volunteers
are working with the children in therapeutic classrooms once a week, bringing healing to children at high risk of abuse and/or neglect. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer in a classroom at CRN, if you would be willing to
launch a clothing drive or host a baby shower, or if you would like to help in some other way. We can help you get started. For more information, visit the Children's Relief Nursery website: www.crn4kids.org |
