Malawi and Africa MapNgopi Village Community Partnership

Malawi is one of the worst HIV/AIDS-affected countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Tens of thousands of Malawian adults have died, leaving behind a generation of children to grow up without parents. More than half of Malawi's population lives below the national poverty line and in some cases, families comprised of orphans live by themselves.
Columbia-Willamette Women of Vision has partnered with the village of Ngopi in central Malawi to provide for those most in need, particularly orphans and other children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS, by contributing to meet the community's basic needs such as safe water, health care, agricultural development, educational and vocational training, Christian counseling, and life-skills training.

Ngopi Village facts:

  • Population 418
  • 184 adults
  • 100 young adults 15-24 years
  • 134 children younger than 15.
  • 155 are orphans (some from both the children and young adult categories) who have lost either one or both parents due to AIDS-related conditions

World Vision's goals for Ngopi:

  • Establish a community garden and community-based cow milk and poultry production
  • Increase the size of the existing fish pond and dig two more ponds
  • Construct shelters for orphans
  • Purchase and distribute clothes
  • Identify and register out-of-school orphans and vulnerable children older than 15 and assign them to local apprenticeships and training programs
  • Provide start-up capital and form cooperatives for establishing businesses
  • Focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy
  • Establish programs and policies to reduce the stigma, discrimination, exploitation and abuse against those affected or infected by HIV/AIDS
