NOT BY CHANCE by Sandy Grubb, Fall 2004

The Kangombe villagers marvel that of all the villages in the world we have chosen theirs to support with our prayers and finances.  I share their amazement when I ponder the precious links we are privileged to maintain with this Zambian village as well as with our partner village in Malawi and with the children of the tunnels in Mongolia.  The growing number of supporters who bless this ministry is also cause for amazement.  With so many worthy and important issues facing us, I am thankful for all of you who share my passion for helping children and families in desperate circumstances.

Most people want to help where they are really needed.  I want to assure you that you are bringing hope to places that otherwise would have none.  In Kangombe we provide nearly 100% of the development funds (a small amount is available from child sponsorships).  Our gift of $10,000 each year, wisely used under the guidance and planning of the World Vision staff, is transforming life in the village.  They have never known a time of better health and well-being.  We were delighted to be able to send an extra gift at Christmas to buy "boots" for the Kangombe Football and Netball Club.

Our task in Mongolia is greater in scope, so our financial commitment is larger.  While we join supporters from other countries, many of whom live in New Zealand, we are the only source of U.S. funding for World Vision's Children in Especially Difficult Circumstances Program (known as the Children of the Tunnels) and for the Informal Education Program.  Our gift of $100,000 this fiscal year is averting disaster in the lives of hundreds of children.  This is the time of year when the homeless children, gathered in the tunnels, are most vulnerable to harm.  We are praying they will be receptive to World Vision's offers of shelter, education, and reconciliation with families whenever possible.

Closer to home, the Children's Relief Nursery needs our help.  The clothes we have supplied for their closet fly out as fast as they come in.  Thank you to Jennifer Stull for hosting a shower with her Girl Scout group and to Barb Boswell for making PRN the recipient of her women's conference outreach efforts.  Please contact us if you could host a shower, make a donation of clothing, or come and help by sorting clothing or volunteering in a classroom.
